TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY: THE EVOLUTION AND LEGACY OF
20th CENTURY WAR MACHINES
by Martin Miller
At the dawn of the 20th century the future looked brighter than ever before. Agricultural advances had doubled Europe’s population in the hundred years since 1800. Mass production was flooding the world with cheap and useful goods carried by steamship. The first half dozen years of the new century saw the invention of the airplane, wireless voice transmission, and Einstein’s famous equivalence between mass and energy. The electrification of cities was proceeding apace. Yet this new century, with all its promise, spawned two world wars that would prove more deadly than all the previous wars of history combined. It also oversaw the creation—in the tens of thousands—of apocalyptic weapons that would threaten the very civilization that created them. Why and how could this have happened? Together these books, by Cold-War physicist Martin Miller, tell the story in words, rare historical pictures, and his own dramatic photographs. (Click image for more information.)
